Hi. My name is Paul Helmer and I am your new CBC President! I will be leading our organization for the next two years. Being the 38th President of the CBC, I have some big shoes to fill!! Who would have thought that I would be following in my father’s footsteps exactly 30 years later!
I would like to thank Jim Sikich, our past President, and our strong Board Members, who over the last two years have worked hard on your behalf to improve and strengthen the CBC! Under Jim’s leadership, we have created a new Board of Governance with quality leaders that will help guide our future. We have created a strong Future Leaders program where our younger members can connect and network, at their own events, with other leaders in the Chicago Building Industry. We brought on a new professional management service company, AMS, to run the day to day operations of the CBC. We increased the CBC membership to its highest level ever … 175 members... and we have created a strong balance sheet that we will protect us in the future and allow us to host great educational meetings with exceptional speakers while providing networking opportunities with all facets of the Chicago Building Industry throughout the upcoming years!!! Please join with me to thank Jim Sikich, our past President, and our Board Members for all of their hard work and efforts over the last two years to bring the CBC to this pinnacle!!
As difficult as it may be, I intend to work hard over the next two years to further improve upon these successes while building on other areas of our association.
Our Kick Off Meeting for the 2015-2016 Season took place last week. Hosted by our Future Leaders Group, this was our 4th Annual Summer Networking Event. This event was held at Morgan Manufacturing on their beautiful roof deck. With it being a beautiful Chicago summer evening, this was a fantastic opportunity for over 110 members of both CBC, and our Future Leaders Group, to network with each other and meet new members while enjoying the phenomenal views of the city from this rooftop venue.
The next event for our Future Leaders Group will be in the Fall, and will include a Behind The Scenes Tour of one of CBC’s Merit Award projects. This tour and networking opportunity offers a fantastic opportunity for the project’s Architect and General Contractor to showcase their award-winning project!
On September 16th, CBC will be hosting our Fifth Annual Economic Summit. This year’s Summit Panel will bring together the top leaders and principals from the Architectural firms of Ann Beha Architects, Gensler, JGMA, Perkins + Will, and Solomon Cordwell Buenz. Join us at this event to hear a candid and interesting discussion from the Architect’s perspective of the “Hot and Relevant” topics regarding the Chicago Building Industry. During this event, we will also present ACE Charter High School, and ACE Mentor Program, with CBC’s annual donation collected from shared proceeds from our 2015 Golf Classic.
CBC’s Lifetime Achievement Award program, the Award of Honor Luncheon, will be held this year on November 11th at the Union League Club. Nominations for this award are due back to the CBC in early October. I ask you to reflect NOW upon those people you know who have built lifetime accomplishments and relationships within Chicago’s great Building Industry. Please help us to identify the Men and Women who truly have made a mark on Chicago’s Building Industry. This is an outstanding recognition for those unique and special people who deserve it!! Should you wish to know more about this event, please contact myself or Barb Krause.
It’s Membership Renewal Time!! So please, if you haven’t done so already, send in your membership renewal form and dues. As always, I encourage every member to consider renewing at a Silver Sponsorship level as this is truly your best value over the course of the year. With the Silver Sponsorship you will have your company name and logo prominently displayed in print and online, you will have 4 company member’s listed in both the online and the print directories, as well as having both your firm’s logo and advertisement displayed during the reception portion of our monthly membership meetings. Should you wish to advertise in the CBC Directory, please see the advertising spec sheet in this issue of The Edifice.
As I end our discussion, I want to share with you my personal story about Kidney Cancer. I was lucky. I found out that I had Kidney Cancer after “crashing” while mountain biking in Colorado over the 4th of July. I went to the ER and quickly found out that I had a separated shoulder and broken ribs, but due to a thoughtful ER Doctor, he ran another test as I am on Coumadin, a blood thinner, for life due to blood clots 10 years ago. Within 20 minutes of arriving at the ER, the Doctor told me “I have good news and bad news.” “The good news is your shoulder and ribs will be fine without surgery, the bad news is you have Kidney Cancer.” After thinking about it for 2 seconds, I told him “Today is a great day because if I did not have the biking accident, if I did not come to this ER, if I wasn’t on blood thinners and if you weren't my Doctor who ordered the CT Scan, I would not have known that I had Kidney Cancer.” Just 18 days later, I had my kidney removed along with 100% of the Kidney Cancer! No Chemo. No Radiation. No Lifestyle Changes living with just one kidney. The moral of this story is obvious…...Early Detection Is The Key!!! Please get your physical, stay alert to your body’s needs, go and see your Doctor as soon as you think something is not right, Listen to your spouse, Etc…….. Early Detection Is The Key!!
Have a Great end of the Summer. A Great Fall. Be safe and Stay Healthy ….
