CBC March 2017 General Meeting

from 75.00

The Old Chicago Main Post Office Building is a "one-of-a-kind" building in the historic context of Chicago. It’s both locally and nationally significant for its historic role in mail delivery. It is the sole remaining historic main post office building for what was the United States' second largest city during the years of its active use as a critical hub of postal activity. As the main mail facility for Chicago, it made possible efficient and comprehensive postal service for the city and its larger metropolitan area. The building was the nexus of activity for the transport of mail throughout the country, especially via rail. As such, the building was critical to communications in the United States in the age before the internet. A vast quantity of personal and business letters, advertising material and catalogs, magazines, parcel post, and other forms of mail all passed through the building during its more than sixty years of service.

Since the mid 1990’s the building had been vacant and unconditioned due to the relocation of the facility. On May 16, 2016,  601W out of New York closed on the purchase of the building. Along with a court order from the City of Chicago to  address safety issues, plans began to aggressively transform and reposition the building to support commercial office leasing began.
Sheryl Schulze, a  Senior Project Director with Gensler will share her insights and involvement on the 2.5 million SF redevelopment.
