James A. McShane - A Word from the President...

Welcome back to the CBC Edifice newsletter. We have conducted several meetings since my last writing, completed the 2006 Directory, and commenced a new round of Merit Awards judging. All in all, we have a busy year underway!

Carl Tannenbaum helped us launch 2006 at the January 18th meeting with his annual “Economic Forecast” program. As Chief Economist of LaSalle Bank, Carl always draws good attendance with a witty and insightful presentation. Once again, we partnered with CFMA, the Construction Financial Management Association, to host the meeting.

The 2006 edition of our CBC Directory has been printed and distributed, with more pages and some improvements to the format. I am now pleased to report that this project turned an economic corner this year and became self-supporting for the first time through advertising sales. Many thanks to WBBM NewsRadio 78 Traffic Reporter Bart Shore for contributing that wonderful cover photo of Millennium Park, with tall buildings looming all around the stunning development.

Pat Hughes drew CBC Cub fans to the friendly confines of the Union League Club on February 15th, entertaining our group with lively stories about the club, the game, and his good friend, Ron Santo. We may plan more meetings of this sort, to vary our program topics from a steady diet of building industry news.

This month, we returned to business with a look at the world of very tall buildings presented by Bill Baker, Partner, of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He focused upon two projects, one close to home (the new Trump Tower in Chicago) and one far away (the World’s Tallest Building, now being built in Dubai).

I was really intrigued by Bill’s explanations of how aerodynamics and wind tunnel testing play such a large role in developing the vertical airfoil design of these needle-shaped ultra-tall buildings.

Our last luncheon meeting of the season will be held on April19th at the Union League Club, with Lori Healey, Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago appearing as our featured Guest Speaker. Judging by the early registration response, this will be a must-attend event, as Lori shares her knowledge and insights on navigating her Department. A sign-up form is enclosed with this issue.

May heralds the advent of our 2006 CBC Merit Awards Dinner, scheduled for the evening of the 17th at the Union League Club. Our Merit Awards Jury has selected 16 finalists at this writing from a field of some 40 entrants, and will conduct two more judging sessions to narrow the finalists down to one winner in each of four categories. We have announced the 16 finalists elsewhere in this issue, and also enclosed a registration form and sponsor application with this mailing. Recognizing this as the 50th Anniversary of the Merit Awards, we are preparing special black granite cornerstones with gold lettering for the awards.

Finally, I must call your attention to the 2006 CBC Golf Outing, that will conclude the year at Bloomingdale Golf Club on June 21st. Foursomes are over half sold already, so act now if you wish to play golf! We are enclosing a sign-up form which indicates remaining available sponsorships.

We look forward to your continued support in the coming months as we embark upon a really exciting calendar of Spring and Summer events.

Golf Hole CBC 2006 GOLF OUTING TEES OFF ON JUNE 21, 2006

Last year, CBC brought back the annual Golf Outing following an absence of many years, and attracted a sell-out contingent of duffers and real golfers from Chicago’s great Building Industry. This year, we are running early on selling foursomes, so book yours now! We still have Sponsorship opportunities available, and will accept donations of prizes and giveaways for the Starter Kit. Don’t get left out of this terrific annual event...take action today!

A 2006 CBC Golf Outing sign-up form is included with this issue of The Edifice.

VOICE OF THE CHICAGO CUBS

HUGES INFORMS,
ENTERTAINS CBC

Celebrating his tenth year with the Chicago Cubs, Pat Hughes joined the February 15th CBC Membership Meeting to recount his broadcasting adventures on mighty WGN Radio.

A veteran raconteur, he delivered the goods on his partner (The Old 3rd Baseman, Ron Santo), the game, and the Cubs. With Pat on play-by-play and Ron doing color commentary, they light up the airwaves and keep Cubs fans hopeful, year after year.

Pat came to the Chicago Cubs after 12 years’ service with the Milwaukee Brewers Radio Network, where he was teamed with Bob Uecker.

A graduate of San Jose State University, he hails from Tucson, Arizona. His honors include being recognized twice as the Illinois Sportscaster of the Year and three times as the Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year.

BRING A FRIEND TO LUNCH…
CBC MEETINGS ARE A BARGAIN!

Every month, from Fall to Summer, CBC gathers at the Union League Club for a Luncheon Meeting. This tradition goes all the way back to 1939, when a group of farsighted Building Industry leaders gathered to found the organization.

For many years, the date has routinely been set for the third Wednesday of the month, a fine menu has been carefully selected, and an outstanding speaker has been recruited to speak on a topic of current interest to the Association.

Altogether, this provides our members with a great package for entertaining their customers over lunch...truly a great value at a very reasonable cost.

Next month, why not take advantage of this fine opportunity to show a guest your Hospitality? It’s also a great way to help us grow the organization!

NEW CBC MEMBERS!

CBC has welcomed 8 new members to its ranks since November, bringing our membership total to 140 companies...

NEW MEMBERS INCLUDE:

  • AFFILIATED ENGINEERS
  • BLACKWELL CONSULTING
  • FITZGERALD ASSOCIATES
  • LUCIEN LAGRANGE AND ASSOCIATES
  • TITAN ELECTRIC
  • WILLIS OF ILLINOIS

  • SACHNOFF & WEAVER, LTD.

If you do not presently belong to CBC, we want you to join! Chicago Building Congress is unique among Chicago trade associations for its diversity, providing a common meeting ground for all aspects of the Chicago Building Industry. Our members network with peers and keep well-informed on current issues. CBC's monthly meetings feature top notch speakers addressing current industry topics, and our Merit Award, Award of Honor and Golf Outing programs keep members involved all year long.

At just $495.00 for dues, CBC is truly a bargain investment! Call 630/393-1313 for membership information….

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF TALL BUILDINGS?

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT!

Trump Tower Drawing
Trump Tower is the tallest building to be built in Chicago since the Sears Tower went up in 1972...joining it and the Hancock Building as the highlights of Chicago's skyline.

SOM
William F. Baker

Bill Baker, SOM partner in charge of Structural & Civil Engineering, addressed the Chicago Building Congress Membership Meeting on March 15th on "The Future of Tall Buildings".

His Civil Engineering background commenced with undergraduate work at the University of Missouri and continued with graduate studies at the University of Illinois. His accomplishments have focused upon innovative building systems for low-rise and high-rise buildings, long-span roofs, and special structures.

At SOM since 1981, he has cultivated a collaborative process, integrating structure and architecture to produce exciting structures that are clean, distinct, unified, and economical designs:

  • International Conference Center, Beijing, China
  • ARB Bank Headquarters, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
  • Burj Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  • Peninsula Hotel, Tokyo, Japan
  • Hamilton House, London, England
  • Kowloon MTR Tower, Hong Kong
  • Russia Tower, Moscow, Russia
  • Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois
  • Trump Tower, Chicago, Illinois

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has designed and engineered landmark structures all over the globe...yet two of its finest recent efforts reside right here in Chicago.

Millennium Park has been the Toast of Chicago for revitalizing South Michigan Avenue residential and commercial construction...while drawing people back into the City for social and cultural events. Meanwhile, Trump Tower is rising on the site of the old Sun-Times building to grace the Chicago skyline.
