2008 MERIT AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
|
|
The ballroom at the Union League Club was at capacity on May 28th with almost 250 of
the brightest names in the Chicago Building Industry. That evening, architects, engineers,
builders, developers, and other industry professionals assembled to honor excellence in
Chicagoland construction at the 52nd Annual Merit Awards Program.
Top projects in four categories were all recognized with CBC granite cornerstones to
commemorate their victories.
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY - RICHARD J. KLARCHEK INFORMATION COMMONS
New Construction Chicago
The Project Team Included: Owner: Loyola University; Architect: Solomon Cordwell Buenz;
Engineers: Halvorson & Partners, Elara Engineering, and Transsolar; General Contractor:
Pepper Construction Company; Consultants: JJR, CDC, and Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc.
Nestled in the heart of Loyola's Chicago Lake Shore Campus, the Information Commons is a
bridge that links the University's traditional past to a visionary future. By combining the
latest computer technology with an open flexible design and innovative environmental
systems, the Information Commons is at the forefront of academic research facilities.
This building focuses on the needs of undergraduate students, providing all types of
information requirements: library research, computer support, and access to electronic
resources.
|
Receiving the award (l - r): Devon Patterson, Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB); Wayne
Magdziarz, Loyola University; Brett Boaz, (SCB); and Peter N. Zouras, Pepper Construction.
Working together within the LEED framework, the project team implemented an integrated design
approach to create an energy efficient building with Silver LEED certification.
Runners-up included 340 on the Park, Center on Halsted, and Prentice Women's Hospital.

RAVINIA FESTIVAL NEW DINING FACILITY
New Construction Suburbs
The Project team included: Owner: Ravinia Festival, Architect: Lohan Anderson, LLC;
Engineers: Halvorson and Partners, ESD, Inc., and Bleck Engineering; General
Contractor: W. B. Olson; and Consultants: S3, AT Associates, and Levy Restaurants.
Ravinia wanted the design of the dining pavilion to fit its personality. One of
Ravinia's most potent characteristics in building new audiences is its casual, friendly,
and natural environment. A conducted study discovered that one of the primary deterrents
keeping people from classical music events was that they found the environment
intimidating. On the other hand, there is the other type of customer who enjoys the
upscale grandeur of a night at the symphony. Like Ravinia itself, the restaurant needed
to cater to both types of audiences.
The new pavilion had to be functional on 2 levels. One, it needed to offer several dining
options with a variety of price points so that it could meet the expectations of all.
Second, it needed to be a real destination attraction able to
keep Ravinia vital in the competitive concert marketplace. All this, with
completion during the 9-month period between Ravinia's performance seasons.
|
(Left - Right): David Olson, W. B. Olson; Michael Barnes, Laura Garcia, and Theresa
Hercik, Lohan Anderson.
Runners-up included Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Des Plaines River Valley Bridge
(I-355 Bridge), & Oakton Community College.

VILLAGE OF ORLAND PARK POLICE HEADQUARTERS
Rehab Construction
Client/Owner: Orland Park Police; Architect: Sente, Rubel, Bosman, Lee Architects;
General Contractor: George Sollitt Construction Company; Engineers: Consolidated
Consulting Engineering & McCluskey Engineering Corp.; LEED Consultant: H. J.
Kessler & Associates.
The Orland Park Police Station was undersized for the Department and no longer
met operational requirements. The existing building was situated on a land-locked
site, and did not allow for expansion, resulting in the decision to transform an
existing warehouse into the new headquarters. The conversion of an existing carpet
warehouse involved a new exterior look and two expansions of new construction.
This design incorporated LEED elements meeting operational needs in an energy-efficient,
environmentally-friendly work climate.
Orland Park features this building as an example to future developments in the community.
On November 5, 2007, the Village of Orland Park officially received their plaque commemorating
the achievement of completing the first LEED Gold Certified Law Enforcement Facility in North America.
|
Accepting the award (l - r): Top Row - Raymond Lee, and Jake Davis, SRBL; Deputy Chief
Jerry Hughes, Village of Orland Park (VOP); John Pridmore, George Sollitt (GS); Chief
Tim McCarthy, (VOP); Jim Zielinski, and Howard Strong, (GS); Andrew Deck, SRBL. Bottom
Row - Helen Kessler, HJ Kessler Associates; Patricia Gira (VOP); Louise Kowalczyk, SRBL;
and Tom Lena, (GS).

the Park, and the Peoria Civic Center.

As the old favorite lyric goes, “Summertime, and the living is easy,”
which means we can relax a little to enjoy life more with our families and friends.
This is my favorite time of year and, with two league-leading baseball teams, how
could life possibly get any better in Chicago?
We had a nice turnout for the Prompt Payment Seminar on May 1st at Maggiano's, so
look for more educational opportunities in the coming months. Later that month, on
May 28th, the Merit Awards Night drew capacity attendance for one of the finest
evenings we've enjoyed in years.
The CBC Golf Classic got a little damp on June 25th, but not enough to slow down play.
The day just didn't seem to know what it wanted to do, with spotty intermittent misty
rain and dry periods punctuated with gusty winds at times.
Nevertheless, we fielded a full complement of 144 golfers and raised some funds to
benefit ACE Tech High School. Elsewhere in this issue is the full story on the Golf
Outing, and we'll be making an announcement about the ACE Tech donation at the
September General Membership Meeting.
July 1st commenced our new Fiscal Year, and with it, the issuance of invoicing for
annual dues. I urge you to settle up the dues promptly, and must extend special
thanks to the members who go an extra mile to become
|
Silver, Gold, or Platinum
Sponsors. The extra support means a great deal when developing quality programs,
and allows us to provide improved member services as well.
With the dues billing, you also received a 2009 CBC Directory worksheet. Every
Summer, we commence work on the new Directory, requesting informational updates
from all members. These are important details to get right, so please be sure
to let us know of any personnel, address, or phone number changes. Of course,
your information will be displayed on the CBC web site on-line Directory as well
as the print edition.
Above all, don't forget that your CBC dues now include a page on Chicagoland
Construction.com, the premier clearing house for our industry. If you have not
already provided cc.com with a write-up, pictures, and your company logo, you
are missing out on a major membership benefit. If you don't believe me, just
visit their web site to see all the fine companies displayed. It's a great
marketing tool, and I really like the free e-mail notifications of new jobs out
for bid.
Don't forget that Nominations are still open for the Award of Honor Program
lifetime achievement award if you have a deserving person in mind.
With that thought, I will leave you in peace to enjoy the rest of your Summer….

We’re Looking For Your Dues & Data!
Chicago Building Congress uses the Summer hiatus to prepare for the upcoming season
with several important tasks, beginning with billing for membership and sponsorship dues.
By this mailing, all members will have received their invoices for the 2008-2009 dues,
and we would be most appreciative of your prompt attention to paying those dues.
The mailing also includes a directory data update form, which is used to maintain our
database, and generate the upcoming CBC Directory. The Directory is a lengthy, involved,
detailed process. And, since change is constant, we really need the most up-to-date
information on all of our members to print an accurate 2009 Directory and keep the
on-line version as current and correct as possible.
