Spring made an early start this year with temperatures in March reaching the high
70's while enjoying the sounds of Ron and Pat announcing Cubs games. Those signs
are surely indications that our weather is improving. Much like our attendance has
improved and continues to grow at our regular monthly meetings.
Carl Tannenbaum, Chief Economist for LaSalle Bank, returned on January 24th to speak
to a sizable audience regarding his Economic Forecast for 2007. On February 21st,
Jeanne Gang, of Studio Gang Architects, delivered a memorable presentation on her
Aqua Tower project, leading the audience through the creative process that represents
one of the most unusual structures to grace the Chicago skyline. Dan McCaffery of
McCaffery Interests followed up on March 21st with his breathtaking vision of an
entirely new South Side community situated at the old U.S. Steel Southworks site.
Rolling out great programs has allowed the CBC to attract 18 new members this year
- a notable accomplishment…we're not done yet! Three of our biggest events are
just now queuing up for the months remaining on our calendar before the long meeting
break during the summer months occurs.
Our first TableTop Tradeshow will make its debut on April 18th as our premier networking
event of the year. Exhibitors will set up during the morning in order to welcome guests,
as usual, at our 11:30 a.m. meeting start time. We will enjoy a delightful continuous
luncheon as guests roam the room to visit booths and make contacts while prize raffles will
keep the energy flowing. Booths are selling quickly, so reserve your
|
space now if you wish
to exhibit. Likewise, please book your luncheon reservations if you wish to attend as a
guest…we'd like our exhibitors to enjoy a nice crowd together with a productive
and festive atmosphere. During a brief program at the TableTop Tradeshow, we'll conduct
our brief Annual Meeting and the CBC election for new Officers and Directors.
May 16th will herald the advent of our annual Merit Awards Dinner. At this writing, the
finalist judging is under way with a competitive field of 36 entries narrowed to 16
finalists (see accompanying sidebar) who are making presentations to our panel of judges.
The Merit Awards are always well attended, with a fine gourmet meal and soft jazz
entertainment accenting this year's exciting event. All ears will be tuned to the
announcements that follow “…and the Merit Award goes to….”
The CBC year will complete its annual meeting cycle on a high note with the June 27th
Golf Outing at beautiful Bloomingdale Golf Club. Over 100 golfers (out of 144 available
spots) have already signed up, and numerous sponsorships have already been sold. Please
contact the association as soon as possible to secure your foursomes and book a sponsorship
before the event is sold out. CBC members who don't golf can still participate and see
everyone that day by helping our Golf Committee organize the contests for the golfers.
If you're interested, please contact the CBC office at 630/393-1313.
That sums up the Association's upcoming Spring and Summer calendar. I look forward to
seeing you at one, or all, of our upcoming events.

NEW COMMUNITY FROM SOUTHWORKS STEEL MILL
MARCH 21, 2007 • UNION LEAGUE CLUB
Dan McCaffery (of McCaffery Interests, delivered a fascinating presentation on
his ambitious project ten miles south of downtown Chicago to redevelop the old
US Steel Southworks site into a fresh new lakeside neighborhood. In cooperation
with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, LLP and Sasaki Associates, Inc., the McCaffery
team has created a master plan for 275 acres which includes thousands of new
residences, a retail center, a boat slip, a new harbor, extensive lakefront parks,
bike paths, beautifully landscaped open spaces and multiple new restaurants. The
project will have four phases in conjunction with rebuilding US41 Highway.
Southworks is located between 79th Street and 87th Street on the shore of Lake
Michigan. The large scale of the site and its great location on the Lake Michigan
waterfront make it one of the most desirable pieces of undeveloped real estate in
the City of Chicago, if not the nation.
The site was originally a U. S. Steel mill…built in 1901, but shuttered in
1992 during a decline in the steel industry. The
|
redevelopment of this historic
but badly-deteriorated worksite will provide an economic boost to the City by
dramatically revitalizing the Southeast Side community.
The development team is applying for a City of Chicago Planned Unit Development
and commencing construction in 2007.

Jeanne Gang designed her Aqua Tower to capture views otherwise unattainable in the dense
cluster of high-rise towers that compete in Chicago while making it safer for birds. At the
February 21st CBC luncheon, she shared the fascinating intellectual exercise that produced
her latest design masterpiece.
Aqua Tower features a series of contoured outdoor terraces extending away from the face
of the structure to let residents see past neighbors…gradually undulating over the
height of the building. The organic shaping is further defined by criteria including solar
shading and dwelling types.
The eighty-story tower will provide for a hotel and apartments, condominiums, parking, and
offices totaling over 1.75 million square-feet. This exciting $300 million tower (scheduled
to be completed in 2009) is the largest project ever awarded to an American firm headed by
a woman. Even more, it signals the arrival of a new generation of Chicago architects with
ideas of their own.
Jeanne Gang leads Studio Gang Architects, a practice that has designed award-winning projects
since its inception in 1998. Ms. Gang's work mode combines practice, teaching and research.
As a Professor at IIT, she has taught architecture since 1988. She was visiting professor at
the Harvard Design School in 2005, and held a Louis I. Kahn visiting professor chair at the
Yale College of Architecture in 2005.

AQUA TOWER UPDATES CHICAGO SKYLINE
FEBRUARY 21, 2007 UNION LEAGUE CLUB
The Ford Calumet Environmental Center (to be completed in 2008) is another Studio Gang
creation. Jeanne's work has been featured at the Chicago Art Institute, the National
Building Museum of the Smithsonian Institute, and the International Venice Biennale.
She lectured as one of the Architecture League of New York's Emerging Voices in 2006,
and received an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in the same year.
Prior to starting Studio Gang, she worked with OMA/Rem Koolhass in Rotterdam. Returning to
Chicago, she worked as a lead designer for Booth Hansen Associates.

APPRENTICESHIP: PORTAL TO CHICAGO BUILDING INDUSTRY
For many young people aspiring to careers in Chicago's dynamic building industry,
there is no finer opportunity than the many diverse Apprenticeship Programs offered
through our trade Unions. In fact, many of today's top contractors began their
careers as Apprentices.
WHAT IS AN APPRENTICE?
An “apprentice” is an entry-level worker who learns a skilled trade
through planned, supervised, on-the-job training and related classroom instruction.
An apprentice is a regular part of the work force and earns wages while acquiring
craft job skills. Apprentice programs are offered through every trade Union,
including carpenters, sheet metal workers, electricians, plumbers, painters, tapers,
roofers, laborers, cement masons, and 14 other trades. The duration of an apprenticeship
program ranges from three to five years. At the completion of the program, an Apprentice
becomes a Journeyperson, fully qualified to perform skilled work of the trade and earning
full pay.
For those interested in becoming a skilled tradesperson, a well-rounded high school
education is the starting point. A strong background in math and science is important.
Good attendance is a necessity. Employers greatly value an Apprentice who can perform
technical tasks, exercise good judgement, and prove a strong work ethic.
GETTING STARTED
The selection of Apprentices is typically conducted by a Joint Apprenticeship and
Training Committee (JATC) of each trade. These committees are comprised of both
management and labor officials. Each JATC seeks men and women who demonstrate character,
aptitude, motivation and personality traits conducive to success in their trade.
Apprentice candidates are considered under the equal employment opportunity guidelines.
They are required to participate in standardized testing and are personally interviewed
by the JATC. Each JATC selects candidates who demonstrate reliability and sincere desire.
TRAINING STANDARDS
Both Federal and State governments oversee Apprentice training programs. The U. S.
Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training, administers the standards.
For detailed information on all 24 Chicago Apprentice Programs, contact the Chicago &
Cook County Building & Construction Trades Council at 312/372-2049 or go on-line to
visit www.chicago building trades.org.
