May 18, 2005, • Union League Club, Chicago
2005 MERIT AWARDS HONOR TOP PROJECTS
|
|
The historic ballroom at the Union League Club glowed with anticipation on the evening of
May 18th as the brightest names in the Chicago Building Industry gathered to honor their own.
Over 200 building professionals assembled that evening to recognize the top projects of the
last two years for excellence of design and construction as the 49th Annual Merit Awards
Dinner heralded the results of months of preparation and planning.
Four top Chicagoland projects in four categories were recognized with CBC's distinctive granite
"cornerstone" cubes to commemorate their victories.
Originating with 47 nominees, the entries were reviewed by a panel of 17 expert judges
in March. Competition then narrowed to 16 finalists in recent weeks, with four projects
competing in four classes: New Construction Chicago, New Construction Suburbs, Rehab
Construction, and Construction Under $10 Million. The CBC Merit Awards Jury then narrowed
the field to one winner in each category...a very difficult and challenging task, with
so many high-quality entries to review.

District facilities. An expanding membership caused the organization to outgrow their
space and then increased beyond the capacity of the previously- converted Field House.
After meeting priorities and guidelines for the new building and overcoming site problems,
the results are evident, and the Senior Center is a success! The new 16,650-square-foot
facility provides space for many programs. Any adult over the age of 55 can work out in
the fitness area, have massage therapy, learn how to play bridge, study computers, shoot
pool, or just sit with a good book in the Library.
Runners-up included the Hayes Park New Natatorium, Southwest Women Working Together, and
Uke's Harley Davidson / Buell Motorcycle Dealership.

Summer is again upon us, and with it, time to enjoy our families and recharge our
batteries. For me personally, it also represents the end of my term as your President.
It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I must thank everyone who pitched
in to make the past two years so very successful for CBC.
We're ending 2005 on a high note. The May Merit Awards program was well-attended,
with over 200 industry leaders in attendance. This was due, in no small part, to the
efforts of Chairman Fred Berglund, who created a program that was both entertaining and
suspenseful...keeping every project team on the edge of their seats until the envelope
was opened.
For those of you who couldn't attend this year's event, the following projects took
home the 2005 Merit Award cornerstones:
-
New Construction Chicago - Lincoln Park Zoo Regenstein Center for African Apes, Chicago
-
New Construction Suburbs - BAPS Shri Swamanarayan Mandir, Bartlett
-
Rehab Construction - Kendall College Riverworks Campus, Chicago
-
Construction Under $10 Million - Patty Turner Senior Center - Deerfield Park District, Deerfield
More information on the winning projects and photos of the event appear elsewhere
in this issue of the Edifice, as well as on the CBC web site.
I must also thank our 2005 Merit Awards Judges for their diligent efforts,
including David Banks (St. Paul Travelers Bond), Bill Bast

Our final event of the CBC year will be our first Golf Outing in many years,
scheduled for June 22nd at the beautiful Bloomingdale Golf Club in Bloomingdale.
At this writing, only two foursomes remain available, and all major sponsorships
have been underwritten. By all means, if you haven't signed up yet for golf
and/or a sponsorship, call the CBC office today! This promises to be one of our
best events of the year.
While regular CBC monthly meetings always take a Summer break until
mid-September, the Association itself does not. We continue full speed
ahead in many ways, gearing up for a new season of programs, events, and
membership recruitment. Regarding the Fall season, the Board is busy
researching and scheduling an exciting line-up for the 2005-2006.
Our kickoff program on September 21st remains a secret, but it
always begins the year with a major presentation for the first meeting.
The 2005 Award of Honor Committee has mailed out its Nomination packages
to all CBC members, and a nomination page appears on our web site at
www.chicagobuildingcongress.org. I urge you to nominate a deserving person.

ACE MENTOR PROGRAM
Career Directions for Students in
Architecture, Construction and Engineering
|
|
On April 20, 2005, CBC presented Dr. Charles Thornton on the Ace Mentor
Program…which he founded and still serves as Chairman.
ACE is becoming the building industry's foremost mentoring program. It was established
by the principals of several leading design and construction firms to introduce
promising high school students to career opportunities in the industry.
After several years of experimenting with various mentoring models, ACE was born
in 1994. Seventeen firms banded together into three teams, each organized like a
typical design and construction team, and "adopted" about 90 students from local
high schools. Volunteers from each of the firms, serving as mentors, worked
directly with the students...introducing them to people and projects within the
construction industry. Students learned from design professions about the role
that each performs in planning/designing/constructing
|
a project. Students also
gained first-hand insight into the design industry by touring project offices,
visiting active construction sites. Students worked closely with their mentors
to solve challenging "real world" projects.
In 1995, ACE held its first fundraiser for scholarships benefiting ACE graduates.
Scholarships are now awarded annually to ACE graduates who go to college for
careers in design and construction.
ACE continues to grow...both vertically and laterally. Chapters are "under
construction" in cities across the United States, and existing chapters
continue adding new mentoring firms and improving program quality.
For more information on the ACE Mentor Program, visit the ACE website at:
www.acementor.org.

We're Looking For Your Dues & Data!
Chicago Building Congress keeps busy during the Summer preparing for the new year
ahead (did you know that our Fiscal Year actually begins in July and ends in June?)
with several important tasks, beginning with billing for dues. Soon, all members
will receive their invoices for their 2005-2006 dues, and we would be most
appreciative of your prompt attention to paying the dues.
This mailing will also include a data update request form, which we use (a) to
maintain our membership database, and (b) to develop and publish the CBC Directory.
The latter project is a lengthy and detailed process. And, because change is constant,
we really need up-to-date information on all members names, addresses, phones, faxes,
etc., to keep the print Directory and on-line version current.
